They were featured artists at The Glens Falls Blues Festival, and the Blues 2000+4 Festival. For several years they’ve played to enthusiastic concert crowds, including performances at Rockefeller Center’s City Sounds, Staten Island’s Back-to-the-Beach and Twilight series, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, and opening for Creedence Clearwater Revisited. The band’s founder and leader “BIG FRANK” Mirra’s credits include The Mohair Sam Band, and The Street Hawks, an acoustic group that focuses on early roots music

River City Slim & The Zydeco Hogs

Style: Canjun, Louisiana, Zydeco

What Is Zydeco?

Back in the early 1950's, traditional Cajun and Creole music collided with the rocking Rhythm and Blues sounds that were sweeping the country, and a new style of music emerged. It was christened Zydeco, from a song popularized by Zydeco pioneer Clifton Chenier. The Zydeco we hear in Louisiana today is a popular and exciting dance music that owes much to Chenier and his contemporaries.

River City Slim & The Zydeco Hogs bring the exuberant sounds of the steamy bayous of southwestern Louisiana to the hills of New England. The Zydeco Hogs cook up a spicy musical gumbo that combines the traditional sounds of the button accordion and washboard with a driving, syncopated beat.

Instrumentation
River City Slim - Drums, Vocals
Rockin' Robin Bean - Rubboard, Fiddle, Vocals
Toad Eckert - Guitar, Vocals
Andy Karlok - Bass, Vocals
Mark Thompson - Accordion, Vocals

Show starts @ 9pm

A Brief History of Delta Blues

Scholars in general disagree as to whether there is a substantial, musicological difference between blues that originated in this region and in other parts of the country. The defining characteristic of Delta blues is instrumentation and an emphasis on rhythm and "bottleneck" slide; the basic harmonic structure is not substantially different from that of blues performed elsewhere
