Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, March 21, 1952, Nasty Ned is a roots-rockin' blues man who celebrates the music. Enjoying a career that spans six decades,
Nasty Ned has burned the hottest stages in America with the coolest cats and kittens in the world. His latest CD ROOTS 52 is what blues is all about. Armed with reverence, expansion, abandon and chops! Nasty Ned shouts and blows his blues heart-out, all in one motion, all on the same takes - all as he loves to do live on stage.
Ned enjoys taking live, unrehearsed performance into the recording studio. He says, "It's about the joyous noise, the electrification, sensation, connectay-tion, story-tellin' temptation, and jes plain doin' the do... you know, havin' a good time diggin' roots, and playin' dem deep, deep blues”.
In 1964, after hearing Slim Harpo's “Baby Scratch My Back” on WABeatleC, Ned rubbed two nickels together and bought his first Hohner marine band harmonica, laying down the saxophone he had been playing since 1959.
By '66 he was fronting his own band called The Carnival of Soul and wound up on TV in Newark with the Chiffons. After passing up an opportunity with Kama Sutra Records, he began digging deep for the roots of rock & soul and found the blues; Muddy, Wolf, Walter and Sonny Boy.
"What a long strange and wonderful trip it has been".
Ned remembers digging Albert King who opened many a show at the Fillmore East in the 60's, then later, in the 80's, playing elbow to elbow with legend on stage at the old Lone Star Cafe.
Ned claims very seriously of the blues, “I’m lucky to have found an outlet for my pain and confusion. I can let go of it man... not a lot of people are that fortunate”.
Then admitting with a wink says he, “should have stayed playing baseball during the 60’s”.
Today, Nasty Ned the performer, writer, promoter, visual artist, media personality, bidnessman and long time show-host of American Roots Live, continues to realize his vision of a celebration of American roots music.
Through six decades of "doin' the do", Ned still breathes for the creative process, is always ready for anything and is a blues man to his soul.
Nasty Ned has lived the blues. He has become the blues and has risen out of the blues. He now says simply, he is enriched and "honored to have found the fathers of the joyous noise and to let burn eternal their spirit in my soul and my style".
